"Save The Last Dance" has become the surprise success story of 2001. Made on a budget of $13 million the film went on to gross over $91 million at the US box office. The film tells the story of a young ballerina (Julia Stiles) struggling to cope with the accidental death of her mother & her desire to become a professional dancer. On top of this she is forced to live with her father in the black ghettos of Chicago. She eventually falls in love with a black student (Sean Patrick Thomas) who helps her regain her confidence. Tragedy, racism, crime, & acceptance are all prevalent themes set around the hip-hop dance scene. Solid acting from Julia Stiles & newcomer Sean Patrick Thomas make it work. "Save The Last Dance" should have strong appeal to teenage girls & fans of dance musicals.
